Shop Custom HatsDifferent garments and artwork call for different techniques. Here's how each method works — and when to use it.
The gold standard for bulk apparel. Ink is forced through a mesh stencil directly onto the fabric, producing vibrant, opaque colors that stay sharp through hundreds of washes. Ideal for 12+ pieces with 1–6 colors.
A full-color design is printed onto a special film, then heat-transferred to the garment. DTF handles photographic detail, gradients, and unlimited colors on any fabric — with no minimum order.
Ink jets directly into cotton fibers — like an inkjet printer for apparel. Exceptional for photorealistic prints on light-colored 100% cotton garments. Soft hand feel, no minimum.
Thread stitched directly into the fabric for a textured, premium look. Standard for polos, hats, and outerwear. Holds up better than any print method in commercial laundry environments.
Colored vinyl film is cut to shape and heat-pressed onto the garment. Works on virtually any fabric and produces crisp, clean edges perfect for names, numbers, and bold single-color logos.
Dye is infused into polyester fibers under heat and pressure, creating all-over prints with no hand feel. Vivid, edge-to-edge color that never cracks or peels because the ink becomes part of the fabric.
We've been manufacturing custom promotional products since 1989 — long before DTF was a thing and before "print on demand" was a buzzword. That experience means we catch mistakes before they happen and we know which methods hold up in the real world.
Everything about our T-shirt order from the Monterey Company was OUTSTANDING. If your order happens to be small (as ours was), don’t worry; they will treat you like you’re one of their top customers. The order process was smooth and user-friendly from beginning to end; the communication was frequent and clear; and the quality of the final product was excellent (and captured more detail than we had imagined). Additionally, the T-shirt material was soft and durable — very top notch! And most of all, their suggestions for improving on our original artwork were perfect and added nice touches to our original ideas. Not to mention their pricing options — VERY reasonable! James and the rest of the team were a pleasure to work with. We will gladly use them again in the future!
We had what is probably considered a smaller order since we are not a company, but we had t-shirts made for an event. The entire process from beginning to end was thorough, professional, and there was great attention to detail so we would get EXACTLY what we wanted at a really excellent price. The quality of the tshirts was excellent. I would not hesitate to use Monterey Company again. Everyone we interacted with was wonderful. Thank you!
We’ve used Monterey Company hats for 4 years and they’re top notch when it comes to customer service, design and quality goods. The process is always seamless. Special shout out to our rep Eric who responds at lightning speed. And to the design team who always nail our designs with very little need for revision. I also appreciate how the company stays up on fashion trends offering the latest styles. They help keep our swag stylish and our customers happily repping our brand.
The Monterey Company and especially Amy were amazing to partner with. We ordered custom beanies and trucker hats with a tight deadline. Not only did both hats come out amazing, they sent us extra patches and an extra sample hat which was a highly sought after hat in the office. Amy and team went above and beyond to answer questions, make the process smooth and in the end deliver a fantastic product. Thank you again!
I worked with Eric Turney of the Monterey company to turn my art into woven patches sewn onto hats. I can’t say enough good things about him and this company. Eric’s customer service is stellar. He was very knowledgeable, kind, responsive, thorough, went out of his way to help me to make sure everything was as I was hoping it would be and got my hats to me with time to spare for my deadline. The woven patches are high quality, fairly priced and sewn beautifully on the hats. This company are professionals at what they do and with very kind and knowledgeable employees I’m looking forward to working with them again. Thanks for everything Eric and Monterey Company!
Every order is configured to your specs. Here's what you can control.
We carry hundreds of blank garments from brands like Gildan, Bella+Canvas, Next Level, Port & Company, and Champion. Tell us your preference or we'll recommend the right fit for your project and budget.
Screen printing handles up to 6 spot colors with Pantone matching for precise brand consistency. DTF and DTG deliver unlimited full-color output with no extra setup charge. We'll match your brand standards exactly.
You can print on virtually any part of the garment. Multi-location printing is available on most methods. We'll advise on the optimal placement and print size for maximum visual impact.
Screen printing has a minimum of 12 pieces per design to cover setup costs and deliver per-unit pricing that makes sense. DTF and DTG have no minimums — order 1 or 1,000. We'll always recommend the method that gives you the best outcome at your quantity.
Quick answers on minimums, lead times, print methods, artwork, and what goes into building a custom apparel order from scratch.
It depends on the print method. Screen printing requires a minimum of 12 pieces per design — that's what makes setup costs worthwhile and keeps the per-unit price low. DTF (Direct to Film) and DTG (Direct to Garment) have no minimums, so you can order a single item. If you're on the fence, we're happy to walk you through the price breaks so you can decide what makes sense for your budget.
Standard production time is 7–10 business days after artwork approval. Rush orders are available in some cases — reach out and we'll let you know what's possible given your quantity and decoration method. Production time starts after you approve your digital proof, so getting back to us quickly on revisions helps keep the timeline tight.
In most cases, yes — we can print on customer-supplied garments. We can't guarantee results on blanks we didn't source, and our satisfaction guarantee won't apply to the garment itself. For best results, we recommend letting us source the blanks. We have established relationships with major blank suppliers and can often get you better pricing than you'd find retail.
Vector files (.AI, .EPS, .SVG) are preferred for screen printing, embroidery, and HTV because they scale without losing quality. High-resolution raster files (300 DPI or higher .PNG or .PSD) work well for DTF and DTG. If your file isn't perfect, our art team will review it for free and let you know what adjustments are needed before we print anything.
Screen printing uses physical stencils and ink layered directly onto the fabric — the most durable method for bulk orders, with bold, vibrant colors. DTF (Direct to Film) transfers a full-color design from a printed film using heat pressure. DTF is better for complex artwork, photo-realistic designs, and small runs because there's no setup fee or color limit. For orders under 25 pieces or designs with gradients, DTF is usually the better call.
Absolutely. Embroidery is one of the most popular decoration methods for outerwear, hoodies, and polos. We can embroider on virtually any structured garment — left chest logos, back designs, sleeve text, and cap embroidery are all common requests. We'll digitize your artwork for free and send a digital mockup for approval before stitching a single thread.
Yes — multi-location printing is available on screen printing, DTF, DTG, and HTV. Front chest, back, sleeves, collar, and hem are all printable locations. Each additional location is priced separately. Let us know where you want your artwork and we'll build that into your quote.
We do. Custom socks are one of our most popular items — especially all-over sublimation printed socks. They make great merch items, trade show giveaways, and team accessories. We can produce knit-in designs (jacquard) or sublimation-printed socks depending on your design complexity and quantity. Contact us for pricing — minimums and timelines vary by method.
Share your idea, upload your artwork, or just describe what you need. We'll send back a free digital proof and a detailed quote — no obligation, no automated responses. A real person handles your order.
