We use it from the jump when describing hats to customers more often than not to help them make a decision on which style hat to purchase and customize. But not many people really understand what “structure” means. Let’s break down the key differences between what structured and unstructured hats have in common, and what makes them unique from each other.

What Does “Structure” Mean?

A hat structure is how the two front hat panels sit and are stitched together. The base material of these panels can be either more or less supportive, which changes how the hat sits. This is how you determine whether a hat is structured or unstructured.

What Makes These Hats Similar?

Both structured and unstructured headwear can have the same number of panels, or pieces of material that form the hat. We determine structure using the base material of the panels instead. They can also have a curved bill and/or a snapback, which does not affect the hat structure.

What is A Structured Hat?

A structured hat is a more reinforced style that sits firmer while on its own. When you take a structured hat off your head, it won’t lose its shape once you put it down. Great examples of structured hats include truckers and new-era hats.

Mid-High Profile

Most structured style hats have a sturdy crown or front profile of the hat, that is higher than unstructured styles. Because they have the extra backing, they can afford to produce taller hats. These hats are roomier on your head because of their higher crowns.

Unstructured Hat

Unstructured hats, as the name suggests, do not have the ability to maintain their shape. When you place the hat down on a table, the crown of the hat will collapse slightly. We recognize it most by the slight divot inward on the crown. Unstructured hats include styles like dad caps, skimmers, and beanies.

Low Profile

Unstructured hats tend to have lower profiles compared to structured hats. Because they don’t retain their shape well, we can’t raise them higher than a low to mid-profile hat. However, they provide a snugger fit on your head because it!

Customizing Unstructured Versus Structured Hats

Because of the firm fit of structured hats, most people lean more towards choosing them when customizing. Both patches and embroidery are easier to place on the hat when it has more solid backing. However, keep in mind who would be wearing your hats! Not everyone is a fan of this style, and prefers something that is easier to store or pack away for other seasons. So unstructured hats can be just as good of an option as structured depending on your audience.
