The “ball” sits in a hollow socket with a hole on one end, which is where the ink flows into from the ink chamber. As you write with the promotional pen the ball turns and ink spreads over it, which then transfers to the paper. The key comes from the ink, which dries extremely quickly. Fountain Pen

Fountain pens have a reservoir of water-based ink instead of their ball point companions. The ink runs through a “feed” into the pen’s “nib” or tip.
