We have plenty of customers still confused about how bucket hats and booney hats contrast one another, and it’s no wonder! Stylistically both hats have plenty of similarities to one another. But we’ll walk you through how both of these hats compare to each other so you can make the best decision for what you need.

What is the Same on Bucket Hats and Booney Hats

Sun Coverage

The sun can still cast UV rays even on cloudy days, so having either of these hats can keep you much safer. Both hat styles come with a wider brim than most other hats, save for the larger beach straw hats. But straw hats due to their size can be difficult to travel very far with. Booney hats and bucket hats are created to cast more of a shadow on your face and neck, protecting you from the sun’s rays.

Year-Round Outdoor Use

No matter what season, both booney hats and bucket hats are ideal outdoor headwear. You can keep yourself protected against the elements with either style hat, but each hat is better for different kinds of weather. We will go more into detail on which hat is better for what kind of weather!

Bucket Hats

Fun and Colorful Styles

This style of headwear was named for mimicking the look of a bucket and lid. When you’re wanting a variety of colors or patterns, bucket hats are your best choice. They have plenty of delightful bright colors and patterns, including polka dots, swirls, and even animals or artworks.

Solid Sloped Brim for Rain

Bucket hats don’t need to only be worn in the rain. During rainy or stormy weather. The brim of bucket hats sit with a slight curve downward and it doesn’t move easily. The curve allows the rain to fall onto the hat and fall easily down and away from your face.

Casual Use

Bucket hats are wider and have a larger crown compared to booney hats. They’re not as secure, but that’s because they fit more for folks with thicker hair and still want to wear something cute outside. Bucket hats are comfortable and casual, a great combination for anyone wanting that extra bit of protection while outside.

UPF Sun Protection

Many booney hats are made with a fabric specifically designed for repelling sunlight. Blocking UV rays is an essential part of what makes booney hats unique. Using a booney hat limits the need for repeat sunscreen use, which can save you money in the long run.

Malleable Brim for Battling the Sun

While both hats carry a wider brim than most hats, the booney is much wider than a bucket hat. Booney brims can also be moved, so that you can continue to shade your face regardless of the sun’s placement. When it comes to shade, the only other hat that beats the booney in sun protection is a full sun hat. But booney hats are much easier to pack and much snugger, so they’re much better for more active outdoor activities.

Utility Use

We use booney hats for more practical outdoor wear compared to bucket hats. Boonies come with an adjustable rope that connects on either side of the hat. By tightening the rope, you keep the booney securely on your head. Loosening the rope makes hanging the booney hat from around your neck easier. Boonies come in plenty of different sizes too, which makes them ideal for larger heads.
