This is mainly because the material and length of socks can affect how comfortable your feet are throughout your day. Whether on your feet for hours on end or sitting on the couch just wanting some extra comfort, we’re providing you with the information you need to pick the right socks for you.

Types of Socks

1. Athletic Socks

Athletic socks are some of the most common types of socks for anything and everything active! They’re designed with extra supportive padding in the ball and heel of the foot, which reduces blisters during longer and more difficult wears like at the gym or running a trail. They have some compression that helps reduce the socks slipping down your leg during these activities too.

2. Dress Socks

For the business and office type of folk, we know that you need to have style that doesn’t clash with your business wear. Dress socks provide a sleek design, making them slightly thinner than regular socks. That doesn’t mean that you can’t have some fun with them though! A lot of dress socks actually have fun decorative patterns to give you some personality in the office. Dress socks tend to sit higher so they won’t slip down throughout the day.

3. Wool Socks

If you are dealing with more extreme weather conditions, then wool socks will be the best decision. This is because wool is a more breathable material and can actually also stay insulated while wet. You won’t even feel wet until the socks have absorbed over half of the water content they can! By keeping you both cooler in warm weather and warmer in colder weather, we push wool material for a great pair of hiking socks.

4. Compression Socks

Compression socks apply pressure to your leg, ankle, and feet, providing additional blood circulation and reduces swelling of your feet. This also helps reduce pain in your feet if you are on them for longer periods of time. We see a lot of nurses use compression socks since they’re up and walking around for multiple hours of the day. We also see runners with compression socks both during and after workouts to help keep the blood flowing through their legs and help them recover faster.

5. Tube Socks

These socks are a throwback design that anyone can get back into! Tube socks are usually longer socks and don’t have a heel already sewn into them. Having no heel makes for maximum comfort and is a great choice for higher-impact sports like soccer.

It’s not just the material of the socks you can choose from. We can help you pick your socks length, or how far up your legs the socks will reach. Each sock length affects how effectively they stay up when you deal with your other daily activities. So the lower the sock the less movement we would really want to do wearing them.

  • No-Show Socks: No-shows are best with flats or lower-rise shoes. No-shows are extremely thin and don’t even cover the whole foot, so they would move around a lot in a higher-rise shoe.
  • Ankle Socks: we would recommend ankle socks for Converse shoes that have no rise on them. We see ankle socks that either do or don’t go completely over the ankle of the foot.
  • Crew Socks: Crew socks rise a little over the ankle and can be up to the mid-calf length of socks. Simple athletic socks are most likely also crew socks to get an idea! 
  • Mid-Calf Socks: Mid-Calf socks are adjusted to fit either just under or just over the calf. We see most dress socks as mid-calf length so they don’t roll down or irritate during the work day.
  • Knee High Socks: Knee-high socks are worn just under the knee. Knee highs are also made with an elastic band more often than not to keep them in position. These socks are predominantly worn with uniforms such as for schools or on football teams.
  • Over the Knee Socks: Over-the-knee socks are just over the knee, and are also known as OTK’s. These socks are primarily comfort-focused and made for lounging.
  • Thigh-High Socks: Thigh-high socks are the highest-rise sock on the market, minus getting actual tights or pantyhose. These are actually a great choice if dealing with varicose veins! Thigh-highs apply appropriate pressure throughout your leg and encourage blood flow in the right direction.
