Custom Backing Styles
Hook & Loop Backing
Both the rough and soft sides of the velcro are sewn to the back of the patch. A popular backing style for law enforcement vests and backpacks.
Iron-on Backing
A heat-activated glue that is added to the backside of the backpack patch. Quickly and easily decorate your backpack with iron-on backing.
Adhesive Backing
Sticker style 3M adhesive backing. Typically used to hold the patch in place during sewing. Also called sticky or peel-and-stick backing.
No Backing
Our least expensive backing option. No backing requires sewing for application onto backpacks.
A Deeper Dive into Backing and Attachments
We recommend sewing the patch to the backpack for the longest-lasting adherence. We also suggest adding 3M adhesive backing to your patch order. The adhesive backing is used to hold the patch in place during sewing. Without the adhesive backing, the patch can move out of place. Its recommended to use a seamstress if you are inexperienced at sewing. At the Monterey Company, we offer sewing services, just fill out this form and ask about sewing!
If interchanging patches is your style, then custom velcro patches for backpacks are the answer. We actually sew the rough or hook side of the velcro to the backside of the patch. Backpacks with the soft side of velcro or loop side allow you to easily remove and replace your own custom patches.

How do you attach custom patches to backpacks?
The most secure option is sewing the patch to the backpack. If your patch is a heat transfer patch with iron-on backing, you can heat-apply it to the backpack. The final option is velcro attachment, the backpack would need to include the loop side of the velcro and the patch the hook side.
Can you iron on custom patches to backpacks?
Yes! As long as your patch is produced as an iron on patch, you can heat apply your custom patch onto backpacks. Before applying heat to the patch, look up the backpack's material and make sure it is safe under high temperatures, as certain backpack materials can burn or melt under high heat.
What is your minimum quantity?
Our minimum quantity for custom patches is 50, except for chenille patches, which is 25 per design.
What is the best kind of backpack for custom patches?
The best thing about custom backpack patches is that you are not limited to a backpack type. The only caveat is ironing on patches to certain backpack materials, as some materials can get damaged under high heat.
What is the production time?
