Thread stitched layer by layer onto twill backing. Stitch count controls how much backing shows through. Fine text can loss clarity, but for unit crests, rank insignias, and bold lettering, embroidered construction is the strongest visual choice.
Molded from soft rubber using a steel mold. Waterproof, flexible, and impossible to fray. Mud, rain, fuel, sweat. None of it damages the surface. Colors hold against UV longer than dyed thread. The go-to for plate carriers, bags, and field gear.
Thinner thread than embroidered, woven directly into the backing rather than stitched on top. Captures finer detail: small text, thin borders, complex insignia linework. The finished patch sits flatter with no raised texture. Best when legibility matters more than dimension.
Dye sublimation transfers full-color artwork directly onto fabric. No thread work, no molding. Photographic images and complex gradients reproduce cleanly. Best suited for commemorative patches, reunion patches, and display use rather than daily field wear.

The most requested backing for military patches. The hook side bonds to the patch. The matching loop panel is already built into most tactical gear: plate carriers, flight suits, combat shirts, bags, and caps. Patches swap on and off in seconds. Units that rotate patches between assignments and training events use hook-and-loop almost exclusively.
Permanent attachment. The patch is stitched directly to the garment. Dress uniforms, Class A jackets, berets, and garrison caps use sew-on because the attachment needs to survive inspection, not field swaps. Sits flatter against fabric than hook-and-loop with no fastener bulk behind it.
A heat-activated adhesive film melted into fabric with an iron or heat press. Works well on cotton and cotton blends for caps, lightweight jackets, and bags. Weaker on synthetics and moisture-wicking fabrics. For high-stress applications, usually reinforced with a few stitches around the edge.
