Choose Your Construction

Not All Custom Military Patches Are Built the Same

The military patches construction method determines how your patch looks, how it holds up, and where it works best. A morale patch riding on a plate carrier has different demands than a dress uniform insignia.

Custom embroidered military patch with layered thread detail

Custom Embroidered Patches

Thread stitched layer by layer onto twill backing. Stitch count controls how much backing shows through. Fine text can loss clarity, but for unit crests, rank insignias, and bold lettering, embroidered construction is the strongest visual choice.

Custom PVC military patch with raised rubber detail

Custom PVC Patches

Molded from soft rubber using a steel mold. Waterproof, flexible, and impossible to fray. Mud, rain, fuel, sweat. None of it damages the surface. Colors hold against UV longer than dyed thread. The go-to for plate carriers, bags, and field gear.

Custom woven military patch with fine detail text

Custom Woven Patches

Thinner thread than embroidered, woven directly into the backing rather than stitched on top. Captures finer detail: small text, thin borders, complex insignia linework. The finished patch sits flatter with no raised texture. Best when legibility matters more than dimension.

Custom printed military patch with full-color sublimated design

Custom Printed Patches

Dye sublimation transfers full-color artwork directly onto fabric. No thread work, no molding. Photographic images and complex gradients reproduce cleanly. Best suited for commemorative patches, reunion patches, and display use rather than daily field wear.

Attachment Matters

Backing Options for Military Patches

The backing determines where the patch goes, how it stays, and whether it comes off. Match the backing to the application before locking in anything else.

Hook-and-loop Velcro backing on custom military patch

Hook-and-Loop (Velcro)

The most requested backing for military patches. The hook side bonds to the patch. The matching loop panel is already built into most tactical gear: plate carriers, flight suits, combat shirts, bags, and caps. Patches swap on and off in seconds. Units that rotate patches between assignments and training events use hook-and-loop almost exclusively.

Sew-on backing on custom military dress uniform patch

Sew-On

Permanent attachment. The patch is stitched directly to the garment. Dress uniforms, Class A jackets, berets, and garrison caps use sew-on because the attachment needs to survive inspection, not field swaps. Sits flatter against fabric than hook-and-loop with no fastener bulk behind it.

Iron-on heat seal backing on custom military patch

Iron-On (Heat Seal)

A heat-activated adhesive film melted into fabric with an iron or heat press. Works well on cotton and cotton blends for caps, lightweight jackets, and bags. Weaker on synthetics and moisture-wicking fabrics. For high-stress applications, usually reinforced with a few stitches around the edge.

Adhesive peel-and-stick backing on custom patch

Adhesive (Peel-and-Stick)

Pressure-sensitive adhesive with a peel-off liner. No heat, no thread. Built for temporary or display use: recruitment events, trade shows, vehicle interiors, equipment labeling. Not a permanent attachment method.

Beyond the Military

What Are Subdued Patches?

Q

What's the difference between embroidered, PVC, and woven military patches?

Embroidered patches use layered thread stitched onto twill backing. They're the traditional choice for unit insignias and shoulder patches. PVC patches are molded from soft rubber, making them waterproof and resistant to fraying. Woven patches use thinner thread woven into the backing, which captures finer text and detail. The right choice depends on where the patch will be worn and how much detail the artwork requires.

Q

Can I order custom military patches with Velcro backing?

Yes. Hook-and-loop backing is the most popular option for military patches. The hook side attaches to the patch, and the loop panel is already built into most tactical gear, flight suits, and combat shirts. Patches swap on and off in seconds.

Q

Can you recreate an existing unit patch from a photo?

Send a clear photo, a scan, or the physical patch itself. Our design team recreates the artwork as a production-ready vector file and sends a free proof before manufacturing begins. Common for units replacing worn inventory or switching suppliers.

Q

Do you make custom morale patches?

Yes. Most morale patches use hook-and-loop backing for easy swapping and are built in PVC or embroidered construction. Common orders include deployment markers, unit slogans, and unofficial mascot patches.

Q

What is the minimum order for custom military patches?

Our standard minimum for custom patches is 50 pieces. For larger vest-style patches, we can often start at just 25.

Q

How long does production take?

Production time usually runs about 2 to 3 weeks, though it can shift depending on the design, patch style, and quantity. Rush service may be available. Every order goes through a proof approval stage first, so production begins only after your artwork is approved.

Q

What file type do I need for my patch design?

Vector files (AI, EPS, PDF) produce the cleanest results. But we also accept sketches, photos, JPGs, PNGs, and written descriptions. Our design team converts your concept into production-ready artwork at no charge.

Q

Do you make patches for all military branches?

Yes. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force. We also produce patches for law enforcement, fire departments, veteran organizations, and civilian tactical teams.

Q

Can I reorder the same patch design later?

Yes. We keep approved artwork on file. Reorders use the same production files, so patches match the original run exactly. No new art charges.

Q

Do you offer IR or reflective patches?

Yes. IR-visible patches appear under night vision but look dark to the naked eye. Reflective thread options are also available. Both come with hook-and-loop backing. Specify IR or reflective when requesting your quote.
