FAQs
Q
What are police coins used for?
Police coins serve a handful of purposes, but they all come back to recognition, typically. Departments use them to honor law enforcement officers for outstanding service, mark retirements, or commemorate fallen heroes. They show up at academy graduations, promotion ceremonies, and community outreach events. Some units use them internally as morale boosters or a physical token of appreciation for the hard work and shared sacrifice that comes with the job. Others hand them out during public events to build trust with the communities they serve. A well-made police coin carries weight that a certificate or handshake simply can't match.
Q
How much do custom police department challenge coins typically cost?
Pricing varies based on many factors, like coin size, thickness, material, number of colors, finish type, and order quantity. Challenge coin pricing typically ranges from $3 to $15 per coin for most standard configurations. A straightforward single-sided coin with one or two enamel colors in a quantity of 300 costs significantly less per piece than a dual-sided, full-color coin with specialty edge treatments in a run of 50. Bulk orders always bring the per-unit price down. The best way to get an accurate quote is to reach out with your specifications, and our team will walk you through the options.
Q
What is the minimum order quantity?
Our minimum quantity is 50 coins per design. When producing custom coins, the tooling, die creation, and setup make smaller runs overwhelmingly expensive for the end client. At 50 units, we hit the perfect middle ground, offering exceptional craftsmanship at an affordable price. Bulk orders of 100+ units unlock even better per-unit pricing, so if you're running a recognition program or annual event, it's worth thinking ahead.
Q
What is the production time?
Standard production time runs approximately 3–4 weeks from art proof approval to completion. The ordering process typically breaks down into three parts: we finalize your artwork within a few business days, you approve the digital proof, and then our production team gets to work. Shipping to your location usually adds another 3–5 business days in the United States, and we ship to APO and FPO addresses as well. We'll give you a firm delivery date once your order is confirmed, so there are no surprises. If you're in a rush, let us know and we can check our production schedule.
Q
Do you offer rush services?
Yes. Our rush service can significantly reduce the typical 3–4 week production window, depending on order size and complexity. Rush fees and rush shipping will vary based on how aggressively we need to accelerate production, but we're transparent about costs upfront. If you're working against a hard delivery date, tell us immediately. The sooner we know, the more options we have.
Q
What file types are accepted for my coin design ideas?
We accept a wide range of file types to make the design process as easy as possible. Vector files are ideal — AI, EPS, SVG, or PDF. These give our design team the cleanest foundation to work with. But we also happily accept high-resolution raster files like PNG, JPG, and TIFF (300 DPI or higher preferred). Got a photo of your department patch? A badge design from your website? A sketch on a napkin? Send it over. We've seen it all and can work with virtually anything you provide.
Q
What are police challenge coins?
Police challenge coins are custom-designed coins made specifically for law enforcement agencies, units, and organizations. They borrow from a military tradition that dates back decades. The idea that carrying a coin signifies membership, loyalty, and shared experience. In policing, they've become a staple of department culture. Officers carry them as symbols of unit pride. Chiefs present them for exceptional service. Families receive them at memorials. Custom challenge coins for police departments are built around the department's identity, mission, or a specific event worth remembering.
Q
Can I see an art proof before ordering?
Yes, and we require it. Every custom coin order goes through digital artwork approval before production starts, and you'll receive a detailed proof to review for colors, text, and sizing. Revisions are normal, and we do not move forward until you approve them, since changes after the setup can add fees.
Q
What does it mean when a police officer gives you a coin?
When a police officer hands you a coin, it's a personal gesture of respect. It doesn't happen casually. Officers typically carry a limited number, and giving one away means the recipient did something worth acknowledging. Whether that's a civilian who stepped up during an emergency, a community member who made a real difference, or a fellow officer who went above and beyond. In many departments, receiving a coin from a chief or commanding officer is considered one of the highest informal honors. It's the perfect way to say something that a thank-you letter can't.
Q
What should we put on a police challenge coin design?
Most police challenge coins feature a department badge or seal, unit name, jurisdiction, and a motto or mission statement. Beyond that, the options open up: memorial dates, operation names, thin blue line imagery, K-9 unit graphics, flag elements, founding years, or custom illustrations. If you're designing an appreciation coin for a retirement or memorial, thin blue line elements and end-of-watch details are common additions. Not sure where to start? We work with departments on this every day and can guide you through layout and content.
Q
Can we add badge numbers, names, or ranks?
Yes, and it's one of the most popular upgrades for police coin orders. Badge numbers, officer names, ranks, years of service, and end-of-watch dates can all be engraved onto your coins. The engraving happens after the main production is complete, so each coin in your order can carry unique personal details while keeping the same core design.
Q
Can we use our patch artwork?
Yes, and departments do this all the time. If you have artwork from an existing patch order, we can use it as the foundation for your coin. Send us whatever you have, and we'll adapt it for coin production. You'll see exactly how everything translates in your digital art proof.
Q
What size is best for police challenge coins?
The 1.75-inch (44mm) coin is our most requested size for law enforcement orders. It's large enough to showcase detailed badge artwork and text on both sides, yet small enough to carry in a pocket or fit a standard coin capsule. We commonly produce coins from 1.5 to 3 inches in diameter, but can produce any custom size. Smaller coins work well for community events and giveaways. Larger custom commemorative coins are often used for bottle-opener-style coins or for larger display pieces that are set on a desk, hung in a case, and passed down for years. We also offer free shipping on samples to the United States so you can see and feel the size before placing your full order.
